Texas is a very homeschool “friendly” state, with little interference from authorities, as long as you teach the constitutionally mandated subjects of reading, spelling, grammar, mathematics and a study in good citizenship and do so in a bona fide (not a sham) fashion.
Texas has not always been friendly to homeschoolers. The Texas Home School Coalition has a short history of homeschooling, including the legal issues in Texas.
The Texas Home School Coalition (THSC), through its Association, offers legal representation for homeschool issues for homeschoolers.
The Homeschool Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) also offers legal representation. Both groups lobby the Congress of Texas to keep homeschooling legal.
The main issue where families may have a challenge is in dealing with the school district. For more information, THSC has a FAQ page on “Dealing with the School District.”
